The community looks forward to the media playing an important role in its social amelioration, Social Affairs Minister Yusuf Al-Othaimeen said at the inauguration of the Third Economic Information Forum in Riyadh Sunday.
On behalf of Minister of Culture and Information Abdul Aziz Khoja, Al-Othaimeen gave the inaugural address at the forum sponsored by the Riyadh Chamber of Commerce and Industry (RCCI).

“In the light of rapid developments that are taking place in the electronic and print media, journalists have the responsibility to educate readers on various issues that concern their present and future,” Al-Othaimeen said, hoping that the two-day forum would evaluate the role of media in a fast developing society and further identify its positive measures that could fulfill social expectations.

Khalid Al-Khudeir, chairman of economic information at the RCCI, said the media personnel should be professionally skilled to handle a variety of situations and report them to the people as they really happened.
He stressed that it is the responsibility of the media to portray the correct picture of the problems for the greater good of society.
He also took the opportunity to outline the RCCI’s activities and its future calendar of events.

In his speech, RCCI Chairman Abdul Rahman Al-Jeraisy said media could contribute a great deal toward developing the country’s economy.

The business community depends on information provided by the media for their planning and investment programs, the chairman said, warning the media that distorted information could jeopardize public interests which would eventually retard development programs.

On Monday, the forum’s sessions will focus on the role of universities on dissemination of economic information.
